Vitalis Georgios

  • Born at Ysternia of Tinos, in 1840. After graduating from high school, he followed his father to Smyrna in order to help him in his architectural work performed there.
  • Soon, he realizes that he wants to carve out a different way. He secretly arrives in Athens and splits his days between the marble workshop of his uncles' (popular sculptors, known as Fytali brothers) and the Polytechnic.
  • He graduated from the University of Athens, and in 1862, when a scholarship was offered to him by the Queen of Greece, Amalia, he started his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He soon prevails there, ranking first and King Ludwig suggests that he takes the seat of professor of Fine Arts at the Academy of Munich. Once again, he has bigger plans for himself. Honors and titles seem little compared to his vision of the Refined Man through Art. He returned to Greece and founded a marble workshop in Syros, gracing the capital of Syros (Ermoypoli) with numerous sculptures, statues, busts.
  • Greek Prime Minister Charilaos Tricoupis considers his opinion and advice valuable and his contribution essential for the artistic development of Athens.
  • A characteristic and vivid example is the statue of Philhellenic English politician Gladstone, situated in the grounds of the University of Athens.
  • For this purpose G.Vitalis visits England and stays there for three months. The English politician was so much captivated of the personality of the Greek sculptor that he does not stop to correspond with him until the end of his life.
  • He spends the last two years of his life in Alexandria where he created the statue of Averof. He died in the year 1901.
  • Sculpture works of his are also exhibited in the Museum of Tinian Artists, Sacred Foundation of Evangelistria.

Gaitis John

  • John Gaitis was born in 1923, hailing from the village Pyrgos of Tinos. 
  • His ranking is among the top contemporary artists in Greece.
  • He attended the School of Fine Arts Athens University and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
  • He lived a long time in France watching the trends and studying the artistic currents of the great French painters by whom he was influenced.
  • The painter expressed hjmself through a variety of tecniques and movements: geometric, cubist, surreal, expressionistic, and abstract art, as well.
  • Main elements of his style, were the vigorous strokes of his brush, sensuality and Greek colors.
  • A highlight of his artistic expression was the "little man", introduced in the late '60s, and symbolizing the alienation and massification of modern man.
  • Participated in numerous exhibitions around the world (Paris, Rome, Le Havre, Athens, etc.) and received international recognition.
  • John Gaitis dies at the age of 60 (07/22/1984), a few days after the opening of the retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Athens.


Gyzis Nikolaos

  • Born in Sklavochorio of Tinos in 1842. His parents were villagers. From the very early age of eight, he used to draw with charcoal. His themes were inspired by his surroundings: animals mostly and peasants ploughing their fields. Today, sketches of his childhood are preserved in the Museum of Tinian Artists.
  • In 1850, he settles with his family in Athens and begins attending the School of Fine Arts, first as a listener and later, as a student. Soon he attracts the esteem and admiration of his teachers, but he is also praised and wins money prizes.
    A scholarship was granted to him by the Holy Foundation of Evangelistria to carry an ardent desire: to study abroad. At the age of 23, he arrives in Munich.
  • He does not like simply to use a particular style, instead he traces his own personal line, he matches modernity with fixed values and streams of the West with the Greek identity.
  • His love for Greece brings him back to Athens in 1872. In his studio, the dark green shades are replaced with white and pink colors, "reflect" the rich light, but also, the humanity of Greece.
  • The constant search for new topics to saturate his creative surplus leads him soon on a tour to Asia Minor for one year, along with his colleague, Nikiforos Lytras. Each movement or posture, any conduct or garment becomes a sketch, a trigger for subsequent processing.
  • 1874 will find him once again, in Munich, where now, with his "suitcases" full of creative stimuli (memories, performances, sketches), he is undergoing one of the most fertile artistic periods. As his fame goes beyond the boundaries of Germany, European critics rave and awards for his work in international exhibitions follow one another. He's always remained humble, drawing satisfaction from the time of completion of each project.
  • Death finds him, in 1900, aged 59, and his work passes into eternity by staying up, "over the heads of young children" ...
  • 111 years after his death, the exhibition "Nikolaos Gyzis: the great painter" of Theocharaki Institution, created a genuine picture of postmodern aesthetics. Gyzis is truly a "great artist" and therefore, really great the need of turning his work into dowry for future generations.

Lameras Lazarus

  • His origin from Ysternia of Tinos, played an important role in the subsequent evolution of his career. Although the family was established in Athens, he along with his sculptor father, never failed to visit Tinos every summer and especially Pyrgos, where he met the legendary artist Yannoulis Halepas.
  • The simplicity and purity of the landscape grafted his talent. It is no coincidence that over the representational creations, he dealt routinely with creating abstract compositions and never stopped experimenting with the limits of abstraction in his sculptures.
  • After graduating from high school, he studied at the School of Fine Arts, University of Athens and he created his first sculpture, a bust of Boumboulina which today is found in Pedion Areos Park (Athens).
  • Granted a scholarship from the Academy of Athens, he continues his studies at the School of Fine Arts Academy of Paris. After completing his studies he returned to Greece with the outbreak of the First World War.
  • Guided by a pioneering spirit, he never ceased creating exhibitions and extracting awards. An illustrative example is the monument of the Unknown Political Prisoners, first being awarded in an international competition and then exhibited at the Tate Gallery in London.
  • His work, moving between marrying tradition with modern trends, yesterday and today, urges us to join in this process of "marrying" or a ride back to the stone pavilion of Filotheis in Athens (bust Kosti Palama), or by visiting Tinos.

Lytras Nikiforos

  • First sees the light in 1832, in the village of Pyrgos in Tinos. A few years later, his teacher in the village school, Alexander Bon, surprised when facing himself painted by small Nikiforos during the lesson, he exclaims: "You, my child, were born a painter without ever being taught painting".
  • During his studies at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Athens, he has been hired as a partner for the decoration of the Russian Church of Athens.
  • The graduation from the University followed a scholarship from the state and King Othon for further studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. There, he would be talking to fellow students about ancient Greek classic spirit, which pervades his works of this period, many of which can be found today in the Gallery of Munich.
  • Along with his graduation, teachers suggested that he take the seat of Classicism in Munich. But he denies. His mind and heart are in Greece, in the white canvas that awaits him and his art to go on.
  • At the age of 34, he was appointed professor at the School of Fine Arts of Athens University passing his artistic temperament on a series of great Greek painters: George Iakovidis, Polychroni Lempesi, Pericles Pantazis, Georgios Roilos.
  • His works represent the Greek reality, serving the truth rather than verisimilitude. The designs and styles of his works, the idealistic pure Greek home and everyday Greek life, reflect the kindness, spirituality and simplicity of the place.
  • The tour to the East along with his colleague Nikolaos Gyzis greatly enriches his subjects, with figures and scenes from life there.
  • The artistic wholeness that emerges from his works, we would dare say, has its basis in interaction with personal fulfillment. He used to say: "Love for Beauty is the bridge between God and men".
  • Being "born a painter" Nikiforos Lytras has a film-like end. He dies by being poisoned by chemicals in the colors he used for his art.
